English Shepherds on the Ranch/Farm
The Farmers Right Hand
Their natural instincts are not taught but are bred into them through years of careful selective breeding. The English Shepherd is a wonderful versatile dog. These dogs do not tend to stray from home once they know their boundary lines and perimeters. They are an incredibly smart breed that learns quickly by watching and following the farmer/rancher doing their everyday tasks. English Shepherds are good at working all degrees livestock they are normally work close with a loose-eye, and upright they can be headers or heelers generally most are heelers. English shepherds are a great help on farms and ranches with their excellent tracking hunting and treeing abilities. They are adept at ridding properties of rodents, coyotes, possums & racoons. English Shepherds can be bossy and if they do not have strong leadership from their owners they will make their own rules usually not to your liking. These dogs are best for any farm/ranch situation large or small.
The English Shepherd is similar in many ways to the Border Collie they are not as high powered or as intense
workaholics as their Border Collie counterparts. They have been referred to as Border Collies with an off switch meaning that at the end of the day they are content to just lay at your feet. They can be a great family pet in the right environment.
